Faith No More New Studio Album Rumours Begin

gronk

I guess it was invitable, but the rumours regarding a new Faith No More studio album have started to surface, according to Metal Underground at least.

Details seem a little sketchy, with no album title, no record label and no release date, so I guess we just wait and see.

It does seem a bit of a stretch at this stage of the game though seeing as the band has only just reformed and are in the process of preparing and rehearsing for a reunion tour.

I would imagine it would get released on Ipecac??

    • gronk Says:

I would have thought not actually. More likely it would be on some major. Remember billy has kool arrow as well….

    • jacob Says:

I doubt it will happen at all. at least Billy and Roddy seem to have a very big interest in the reunion (what with the updates and all), Patton seems like he doesn’t really care and is probably only in it because of the fat paycheck and maybe some nostalgia.

of course there are going to be rumours about new material, but I’m not believing anything until it’s official. and I’m not sure I even want it to be official. a new album now would not sound like the FNM we all love.

    • gronk Says:

I tend to agree with you Jacob. I don’t think there will be new material but that’s also what I thought about a reunion tour and look what happened.

Why do you think a new album wouldn’t be any good? It’s the same band that made AoTY. Granted it wasn’t their best but it was still a good listen :)

    • jacob Says:

yeah, true. I was also one the people who said “reunion? never gonna happen” only a couple of months ago :P

I never said a new album won’t be good, it will most likely be amazing. but just consider how many other projects the members have been in after FNM and everything that has changed during these 10 years. their influences and ideas have shifted and while they might still get some of that old spark back, I highly doubt it since it’s been said it was pretty much gone already when they made AoTY.

    • gronk Says:

Yeah that is true. Either way it will be interesting :) and we will both be purchasing a copy hehe

    • yeti Says:

I’m not surprised by a reunion at all. In fact I said to my brother in mid-late ’07 I wouldn’t be surpised if FNM reunited around the ten year anniversary of their break up (April ’08). I was off by 10 months but that is supposedly right about when the talks started happening. The other guys dont have anything better to do and the only thing ever stopping Patton was the size of the bags of cash. I would bet serious money there won’t ever be another album. They made their money on the road and The Real Thing was the only album that did well commercially. They’ll be broken up again within the next 12 months. It’s a quick cash grab nothing more, nothing less.

    • McQuest Says:

I think a new album would be really cool if they allow it to reflect their influences and what they are all doing today.
If they sit down and put too much effort into going back in time and writing an album that sounds like the FNM of old it will be forced and not good.
Unfortunatly I don’t see a full album happening though.

I’ll bet a couple of bootlegs that we will get a Live cd of one of the Reunion shows. Hopefully a double disc. At the end of the 2nd CD will be 2 bonus studio tracks. 1 new song and 1 cover song, either This guys in love with you, or a new cover that they will perform during the tour.
A live DVD would be a real bonus.

    • Rob Says:

Why does the press insist on calling FNM a metal band!!

Their versatility is so glaringingly obvious…. some things never change :(

    • Rob Says:

      * glaringly

    • jacob Says:

I like the idea of a live DVD. maybe they could throw in some old material as well, as say… a pro-shot from the ’92-’93 era?

    • gronk Says:

@McQuest: as long as it doesn’t reflect things like peeping tom/crudo!

    • Nathan Says:

      @gronk

I personally am not going to see fnm, neither would i buy a new album.
personally i believe patton has re-sold out after spending the last 11 years dissociating himself with fnm. his recent projects such as fantomas and peeping tom are, in my opinion, 10x better then the old fnm stuff, since he seems to actually care about the music.
with regards to the likely hood of a new album i cannot see it happening since, as patton has stated before, modern record deals would involve exclusivity and so would stop patton from releasing anything on ipecac. with the up coming release of the already delayed mondo cane record among others, i for one cannot ever see him sacrificing his ipecac for the sake of the reunion, even if stupid cash were involved.
      peace,
      Nathan

    • gronk Says:

@Nathan: curious, were you ever a fan of FNM? i honestly can’t see how you could rate peeping tom as being 10 times better than FNM. it is probably one of the worst things he has produced imho. it has a couple of good moments but most of it is a little cringe worthy.

i also believe that he can be involved with FNM and ipecac will not suffer in the slightest. he employs people to do that stuff :)

    • Bister Mungle Says:

Well, on the Patton issue, I did feel some of that disappoint from his perspective as he has, of course, tried to really distant himself from some of the FNM connotations. But he said himself that he’s not embarrassed or anything and thought they’d mostly made the right decisions. So, as I said before, time will tell if he/they have really ‘sold out’ depending on their attitude and approach to this thing. If they can keep themselves relevant and not just a greatest hits jukebox then they can warrant the reunion. One big point about the concept of a new album (and I don’t think this story has anything to actually say on this matter yet) is that it would be silly to say it ‘would not sound like the FNM we all love’ (as Jacob said) as each FNM never was the same or expected. If a new album sounded completely different, then it would be the FNM we all love. It better not sound like ‘old’ FNM anyway! Also, I think they have all said at one point (especially Patton) that if they were back and recording on a major, it would have to be on their own terms as they learned their lesson and were very tired of all the problems that come with these contracts. The fact they are together suggests to me they got the money they wanted and the muscle – so IF they record, it’s on their terms.

    • gronk Says:

@Bister Mungle: yep I agree. I just have this feeling that this may be a “top up retirement fund” for mike, especially seeing as last year he was saying in interviews how he wanted to start winding down his touring etc, and then we actually saw this happening with him focussing less on his touring band projects like tomahawk and fantomas and more on soundtracks and movie voiceovers.

Regarding a new album, you are right, if they go out to try and rediscover the real thing it will be shit, but I think that that is unlikely to happen and a collaboration between them would actually be really interesting.

    • Timb Says:

I reckon they should record something with Chuck Mosely – they would be ‘the real thing’ ;)

    • Timb Says:

Sorry read ‘that’ for ‘they’. Too quick on the ole trigger finger *sigh*

    • gronk Says:

LOL timb. the hype around FNM reforming is probably doing Chuck’s pending release a world of good. Would have been classic to see FNM reform with Chuck on vox, but somehow i dont think he could pull off Patton’s vox.

    • jacob Says:

@Bister Mungle: while you do have a point when you say “each FNM never was the same or expected” (yes, each album is unique and very different from the others), what I mean is that the spontaneousness and will to experiment while everything was still fresh and had not been done before will be missing in large part.

    • gronk Says:

i kinda disagree ;) i reckon the spontaneity and experimental will would be very fresh after a 10 year break up, much more than say around the time they recorded album of the year.

    • McQuest Says:

@McQuest: as long as it doesn’t reflect things like peeping tom/crudo!”"

@Gronk: I would sure hope that Billy and Puffy would not allow that to happen. That would be disasterous.

    • gronk Says:

One would hope so but remember mike is the alpha ;) what was the last rocky album mike released? Suspended animation?

    • durashka123 Says:

I like the idea of FNM releasing new material on Ipecac. Imagine the promotion it would give the rest of the stable. As well as the example it would set to younger musicians as to how to take back their music.

I imagine there are some legal hurdles, but if I were the band I would just crash through them if I could not clear them…. if the music is good, why not?

      • gronk Says:

I would love to see new material and yeah it would be great for ipecac if it was released through it. But why not put it on kool arrow?

    • nathan Says:

I’m always a “let’s look at the facts before jumping to conclusions” kinda guy.
      So here’s a major fact:
Right now (Sept. 2nd-Oct.26th, specifically), there is a huge, nearly two month gap in their tour schedule. Are they holed up somewherre recording?
I’ve been in the concert business a long time and I’ll say this: when you do a reunion tour, the last place you want to alienate and not play is your main fan base (for them, the US). BUT what would make sense is to hold off on making or announcing dates there IF you’re making a new album. Because when you announce the album is being released, THAT is when you capitalize on the feeding frenzy to sell out your tour.

This is my educated guess and personal hope.
