I'm always a "let's look at the facts before jumping to conclusions" kinda guy.
So here's a major fact:
Right now (Sept. 2nd-Oct.26th, specifically), there is a huge, nearly two month gap in their tour schedule. Are they holed up somewherre recording?
I've been in the concert business a long time and I'll say this: when you do a reunion tour, the last place you want to alienate and not play is your main fan base (for them, the US). BUT what would make sense is to hold off on making or announcing dates there IF you're making a new album. Because when you announce the album is being released, THAT is when you capitalize on the feeding frenzy to sell out your tour.

This is my educated guess and personal hope.

I like the idea of FNM releasing new material on Ipecac. Imagine the promotion it would give the rest of the stable. As well as the example it would set to younger musicians as to how to take back their music.

I imagine there are some legal hurdles, but if I were the band I would just crash through them if I could not clear them.... if the music is good, why not?

@McQuest: as long as it doesn’t reflect things like peeping tom/crudo!""

@Gronk: I would sure hope that Billy and Puffy would not allow that to happen. That would be disasterous.

i kinda disagree ;) i reckon the spontaneity and experimental will would be very fresh after a 10 year break up, much more than say around the time they recorded album of the year.

@Bister Mungle: while you do have a point when you say "each FNM never was the same or expected" (yes, each album is unique and very different from the others), what I mean is that the spontaneousness and will to experiment while everything was still fresh and had not been done before will be missing in large part.

LOL timb. the hype around FNM reforming is probably doing Chuck's pending release a world of good. Would have been classic to see FNM reform with Chuck on vox, but somehow i dont think he could pull off Patton's vox.

I reckon they should record something with Chuck Mosely - they would be 'the real thing' ;)

@Bister Mungle: yep I agree. I just have this feeling that this may be a "top up retirement fund" for mike, especially seeing as last year he was saying in interviews how he wanted to start winding down his touring etc, and then we actually saw this happening with him focussing less on his touring band projects like tomahawk and fantomas and more on soundtracks and movie voiceovers.

Regarding a new album, you are right, if they go out to try and rediscover the real thing it will be shit, but I think that that is unlikely to happen and a collaboration between them would actually be really interesting.

Well, on the Patton issue, I did feel some of that disappoint from his perspective as he has, of course, tried to really distant himself from some of the FNM connotations. But he said himself that he's not embarrassed or anything and thought they'd mostly made the right decisions. So, as I said before, time will tell if he/they have really 'sold out' depending on their attitude and approach to this thing. If they can keep themselves relevant and not just a greatest hits jukebox then they can warrant the reunion. One big point about the concept of a new album (and I don't think this story has anything to actually say on this matter yet) is that it would be silly to say it 'would not sound like the FNM we all love' (as Jacob said) as each FNM never was the same or expected. If a new album sounded completely different, then it would be the FNM we all love. It better not sound like 'old' FNM anyway! Also, I think they have all said at one point (especially Patton) that if they were back and recording on a major, it would have to be on their own terms as they learned their lesson and were very tired of all the problems that come with these contracts. The fact they are together suggests to me they got the money they wanted and the muscle - so IF they record, it's on their terms.
