Lombardo: Fantomas Demise or Happy Reunion?
In a recent interview at the Wormwood Chronicles, Dave Lombardo was asked about his current plans for working with Mike Patton:
“WC: Are you still involved with Mike Patton?
Lombardo: No, but that door has never completely shut. Me and Mike will work together in the future, I believe, if schedules permit. He’s great, I love his music, all of the stuff that we’ve done.
There’s always a chance.Right now, I’m focusing on trying to find a band that I could share my production experience with. Going to the studio with them and working with them in the same way producers have worked with me. I want to take my knowledge and apply it to bands that are up and coming.”
Is Fantomas officially over? My impression was that Terry Bozzio was a fill in while Dave was busy working with Slayer and that a Lombardo filled Fantomas would eventually take centre stage again. But Lombardo not ruling out working with Patton again is a good sign. So what’s your opinion on this?
Thanks to FNM2.0 for the interview tip

what makes u think, that bozzio was a fill in? yes, lombardo is great, but bozzio, especially cause of his experiences with zappa, might be a considerable successor

Given they toured earlier this year (albeit with a different drummer) I still think they’re a viable entity. The way Mike works he seems to always have a BIG/MAIN project on his plate (this time its FNM) and everything sprouts out from that. I’d say Fantomas have another couple of albums in them. Wasn’t there a rumour a while back that the next album was being all electronic and the other all acoustic?
Also as Lombardo says he focused on different things and there may be a scheduling conflict with Mike so that could be the main issue.

Hey Gronk, just occured to me why don’t you email Trevor and ask him
August 27th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
@bunglefever: because he was announced as a fill in, which is also evidenced by the fact that Crover has been handling the skins on all the recent Fantomas activities.
But I wholeheartedly agree with you that Bozzio would make a fantastic replacement, he is an amazing drummer. It just wouldn’t be the same to me because I believe the Lombardo/Patton chemistry was what made the band.

@Timb: Yeah I should have been more clear. I don’t think Fantomas is over. I think Mike will get back to it eventually. But Fantomas as I know and love is over if Lombardo isn’t involved.
I adore watching that guy play Fantomas stuff

Fantomas is not over. They’re just going through a “Spinal Tap” phase with rotating drummers, but jesus christ, what an amazing line-up of drummers! If the biggest hurdle is ‘scheduling conflicts’ you can rest assured that Lombardo will be behind the skins sometime in the future, however near or far.

@gronk yeah, now i found the relating articles. i just remembered my thoughts when bozzio was announced cause my second big hero beside patton is zappa

I Agree that Lombardo Patton connection is really unique for the Fantomas sound. I watched Bozzio stand in for Lombardo at the Roskilde Festival, and truly it was amazing, but the aggression that Lombardo is capable of doing and his unique grooves and feel in the Fantomas project is not to replace. Then it will be something else….. and that else could find a new name and concept and ill surely enjoy it as much as Fantomas

What happened for him to be out of the band???
I just thought he was busy with slayer so he couldnt tour…

Fantomas is a Patton project; with Buzz, Trev and Dave essentially featuring as session musicians. Thus, there is no way Fantomas can “break up” per se.

i completely disagree Strangel. Fantomas may have started out as a patton project but IMHO it is a sum of all parts. all the musos add something to the band especially live, and the chemistry between dave and mike onstage is unmatched.
i loved watching the battles they had on stage

Mike: “These guys fuck with my ideas”
yeah, gronk, think u r right

john i didnt mean i think fantomas is over, i just meant it may be that fantomas as we know and love it is over.
but fingers crossed Lombardo rejoins the band in the (not to distant) future

a couple of years back i saw fantomas in sheffield london & glasgow back to back with bozzoi on drums! and patton ofen gave him a disgusted stare, cos he just wasn’t playing the way patton wanted him to….there is no replacemend for lombardo….tho i do think shit loads of money is being made off the FNM reunion!!think all other projects are def goin to take a back seat for at least a year!!!if not more.
August 31st, 2009 at 3:25 am
let me rant…i love patton, have done for years and always eagerly await his latest projects…i’ve seen mr bungle twice 95&2000 in london tho 2000 was the best ever by far, also seen fantomas about 13 times plus patton rahzel,moonchild,fantomas/melvins big band,patton/kaada,maldaror etc etc and i can honestly saw that the FNM performance on tuesday night in edinburgh was the worst!!!the sound sucked, far to loud for a small venue!the fans that where at that show were totally differant to any other patton show..reminded me of the very first time i saw fantomas in 2000,people in the crowd shouting for EASY&MIDLIFE CRISIS then leaving when patton wouldn’t cave in to their demands…thats the patton I LOVE! doing his own thing regargless of the fans…now i think $$$$ have taken over and prob AGE…i hope not!but i think we have seen THE LAST of who we all consider GOD!!! i thank FAITH NO MORE for bringing patton into our lives, cos without them PATTON & MR BUNGLE would never have gone global, but i really wish he’d stuck by his comment/quote/faith no more will probably get back together!but i won’t be their singer/unquote,the nevermen should be out pretty soon and crudo and mondo cane..because i believe they’re already recorded, but as for any other projects,i’m not holding my breath RIP GENERAL PATTON?

RESPONSE PLEASE!!! FROM ALL THE FAITH NO MORONS.
August 31st, 2009 at 4:19 am
sorry GRONK don’t ban me!!i have a valid point.
August 31st, 2009 at 7:20 pm
Mr Ipecac,
I feel your frustration regarding NEW projects being put on the backburner while the nostalgia fest goes forth.
I still think that perhaps Ipecac ran into some slight financial trouble and the monies flung at FNM were a godsend, and of course it was a great retirement pension fund for the other members who are fast approaching their 50′s. The brain surgeon in Scotland (not me) did appear with a suitcase full of cash.
At first I was dismissive of the reunion but if it’s for the above reasons who cares? We just have to be a bit patient waiting for the other things to happen.

Mr. Ipecac,
) but that doesnt automatically mean, that the one band, which had the real global success, is bad. sounds to me like sum kinda reflex commercial = bad
i’m not a so called Faith no Moron, FNM makes ’bout 5% of Patton-related stuff i hear, but i enjoyed it really to see them. Why? Its still a very good piece of Rock-Music (esp. beside those new “rock” bands which surrounded them on the festival and played like sleeping pills.) And yes, bands like fantomas, tomahawk, peeping tom or projects like mondo cane or kaada are real good stuff and until today i never i never regretted one album of all those, i bought (and im nearly complete

patton will be back. i dont think he will be as prolific in terms of touring on the back of his many projects, but the “nostalgiafest” as jimmy puts it will eventually come to an end and Patton will go back to doing what he was doing before.
anyway everyone seems to be enjoying themselves on and off stage and I for one can’t wait to see them in australia next year
I’m not so sure about the ipecac finance theory though, from everything I’ve heard they do pretty damn well for an indie
