Zorn’s Cobra at Yoshi’s: Spruance, Patton, Dunn

gronk

Just missing the aussie contingent, Bar Mckinnon and Danny Heifetz to make this a full blown Bungle shindig. Maybe one day (soon?) I can dream……

Kenny Wolleson was always my favourite member of Mr. Bungle…

    • Jim Bowen Says:

Kudos to whoever filmed this. But it’s shit (no not the filming, the production itself). Zorn must be about 90 years old now. You’d think he would have outgrown his so-called art-noise wankfest by now! Utter drivel.

      Tin hat at the ready!

Jim Bowen la tenés adentro, papá!!!! Mr Bungle grrrrrrrrrrrgarlanga!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • bister mungle Says:

It’s not too bad, has it’s moments, but yeah, on the whole, it is still the same oooold ‘art-noise wankfest’! I appreciate it has it’s time and place, and I have seen these kinda performances go well (done a couple myself, in fact), but what is frustrating and disappointing is that Zorn is supposed to be the ‘king’ (if you like) of this kinda stuff whereas it is a case of same old, and the the aforementioned better performances haven’t been his.

    • MrBungleFan Says:

Yeah maybe it’s just me and I love most of Zorn’s material but honestly this was a bunch of noise to me. I mean seriously you have an all star line up of Patton, Spruance, and Dunn. At least use them to their potential, instead of them making abstract sounds.

    • Jim Bowen Says:

Maybe I’m missing the point slightly, in that this performance was completely inpromptu and pretty much improvised on the spot with minimum rehearsal. Still, there was absolutely nothing here worth revisiting.

At least we got the warring factions around the table again though!

    • Tooby Says:

The whole point of Cobra is that it’s improvised. and there are rules. It’s really not meant to be listened to the same way you would, say, Beethoven. It’s something you experience live and watch the players interact with the prompter and each other. If you are familiar with the rules it makes it much more enjoyable to watch. At this stage of the game, people that are familiar with zorn and are on this site, should understand what Cobra is. The bungle members have been playing Cobra with zorn for years.

Here is a rough cheat sheet of the cobra rules

      @Jim Bowen

At MOST we got the warring factions around the table again.

    • gronk Says:

Tooby is right. Cobra isn’t really more of the same art-noise, it’s about the game and the improv and marvelling at the skills of the musos. I love the concept of cobra and wish that this sort of musical endeavour happened more often. It’s all about the skill of the musician to instantly improv on command. but it is unlistenable ;) it’s really only something to be experienced live too I think

The main reason I posted the vid is cos it’s fucken Patton, Trey and Trev on the same stage! Does anyone thinks it’s possible that Bungle might rise from the ashes? Or should I just stop fooling myself and STFU about it? I know Bar and Danny want it to happen…..

Oh and to the people who have been posting direct attacks at commentors, I have removed your comments if they did not add to the conversation. This isn’t that cesspool bunglefever….

(no one who has a posted/approved comment on this post is guilty of this btw…)

    • Jim Bowen Says:

Were the internet warriors and hardmen taking umbrage at someone having a varying opinion to theirs by posting in vitriol? Very mature indeed.

It’s probably the same dropkicks who used to post childish shit on Caca Volante before.

    • bister mungle Says:

Yeah, I am familiar with the game rules, and appreciate the performance on that basis (it is more akin to conceptual art than more ‘traditional’ aesthetics) but the performance was still a bit disappointing given the cast of musicians, for me anyway. But it was only one ‘song’, on the cobra performance I have on CD (Vol 2 2002) there’s a few duds and a few great songs, so it is hit and miss and, as ever, quite subjective. My main reservation is, as a Zorn fan, that I have this expectation to progress and develop these game pieces to some magically unexpected next level (I guess!) and it hasn’t really happened. But it’s just a personal thing.

    • bister mungle Says:

Oh, and Bungle!! I have no expectations what-so-ever for reformation to be honest, but in that way that I’m shrugging it off and in the event that it actually happened I’d be super stoked!

    • Jim Bowen Says:

Well Bister who would have ever foresaw the FNM reunion? Not even any members of FNM I think!

Then again, a Bungle reunion wouldn’t be the cash cow that FNM was but if Bungle did ever get back together it certainly wouldn’t be about money anyway. That is not part of the Bungle ethos.

I would even be glad to see Patton, Dunn & Spruance working together again on anything, as long as it’s not another impromptu imrov piece like the above!
