Dear Fans,

We want you to join us for our final shows. And we mean JOIN us, specifically in a racket of celebratory and funereal music making.

How it may include YOU:

SINGING: the melody to ‘Bring Back the Apocalypse’ (see the handy notation here).

PLUCKING: YOUR guitar in the precise manner indicated in this instructional video at the end of a new song that might be titled “Smear.”

CHIMING: Herald the coming apocalypse by bringing your favorite collection of small hand bells (we’re not kidding) or other such device to play us out. Under no circumstances are you allowed to bring a saxophone. ..

..-SGM ..”

She also mentioned Tin Hat (trio) have some up coming tour dates:

“Tin Hat will be performing a few West Coast shows in preparation for recording our next album: a collection of poems by E. E. Cummings that we’ve set to music. It’s a new direction for us, and stepping into this new territory has been really rewarding for the band!

Neil Hamburger tweets Fantômas Involvement

gronk

America’s Funny man and archenemy of Britney, Beiber and generic corporate twitter accounts, Neil Hamburger tweeted recently that he has “Wrapped up filming for an upcoming Fantomas project”.

Not sure what this would be, some form of film clip? If so, does this indicate there is completed Fantomas material? Who knows, but apparently there is #nofurtherinformationforthcoming.

Let the speculation begin!

Update: The speculation has begun. Is this for a Fantomas movie?

Update 2: No! Neil confirmed it’s something for the Fantômas New Year’s show DVD that’s currently work in progress (as mentioned by Greg Werckman in the recent American Noise interview).

Trevor Dunn to play with the Dreamers, Electric Masada, The Secret Chiefs 3, and MMW

gronk

According to Trevor Dunn’s gig calendar on his website, he is due to play with “Zorn’s Dreamers, Electric Masada, The Secret Chiefs 3, and Medeski Martin and Wood (subbing for Wood)” at Zorn fest, Lincoln Center NYC on March 30.

Not sure if this means he will be playing with SC3 or on the same bill as, but it’s great to see him due to play with Secret Chiefs again after all these years (and the semi-estrangement).

A little bit more info and full line up can be found here. If anyone has any more info please post in comments.

Thanks to APVrresto for the tip

UPDATE: And a better site with more info, NYCopera.com:

“Written in a flash of creativity during three months in late 2004, the 316 compositions in John Zorn’s Book of Angels contain some of his most lyrical and inspiring music. Performed by a wide variety of ensembles over the past seven years, the music has generated 17 CD recordings to date, with three more scheduled for release in 2011. This special marathon concert brings together 12 different groups of wildly divergent backgrounds – jazz, rock, classical, world music, jam band, a cappella vocals and more – for one spectacular evening of music from this prolific songbook.

Featuring: Marc Ribot, Uri Caine, Dave Douglas, John Medeski, Secret Chiefs 3, Greg Cohen, Joey Baron, Cyro Baptista, Kenny Wollesen, Jamie Saft, Erik Friedlander, Mark Feldman, Sylvie Courvoisier, Trevor Dunn, and many others.”

Purveyors of Unique Art: A Greg Werckman Interview

gronk

Lusty is back at it again providing us ravenous fans with the latest news. This time it’s over at American Noise in the form of a lengthy chat she had with Greg Werckman, Mr Patton‘s partner and Ipecac Recordings frontman.

Among other things, Greg talks about the the state of the music industry, life in the digital age of music (from a small label’s perspective), upcoming Ipecac releases and some news on Mike Patton projects.

On digital music:

“digital is getting really close to matching CD sales. The bands that tour sell a lot of CDs. It’s really kind of funny because a lot of people say ‘Oh the CD is dead,’ but it’s not. When our bands play live, they sell a lot of CDs at the shows.”

On social media:

“I remember Shawn (Vezinaw), who runs our Los Angeles office saying, “I need Mike to take pictures when he’s on the road with his phone, they don’t need to be good, just anything so I can put them on Facebook.” And Mike and I both thought that was kind of goofy. But Mike started doing it. He’d take a picture of a meal he had and Sean would put it up there and there would be hundreds of responses to it. It’s seems odd but you got to do it.”

On The Melvins:

“I still think, as popular as The Melvins are, that they are just ridiculously overlooked. I don’t think there’s a better hard rock band going and that includes the huge bands that play arenas like Metallica or whatever. The Melvins are rock and roll.”

On Mike Patton’s current projects:

“He did the score for the Italian filmThe Solitude of Prime Numbers so we’re going to be putting out that soundtrack. A couple of shows he’s done over the years we’ve taped: there’s a Fantômas New Year’s show that we’re working on that’s going to be this really cool, really funny live DVD that we’ll be putting out.

He’s in the early stages of working on some new Tomahawk music and some new Fantômas music, more Mondo Cane—he’s literally working on six or seven records right now. He’s also got this project (that we’re not putting out) called Nevermen, that’s coming out on Lex Records. It’s with Tunde from TV on the Radio and Dose One from the Anticon world. It’s just going to be three vocalists. It’s just a weird, kind of cool record. He’s also signed up to reprise his role in the Darkness II video game.”

SC3, MadLove and Umlaut – A taste of the tour

Gezarie

It’s a day for reminiscing, here at stubbadub. A year ago today, Gronk and I were with a bunch of you good people at the Hordern Pavillion, Sydney, for Faith No More‘s first sidewave. But, after wallowing in many a bittersweet memory today, it’s time to look to the future, and so to the up-and-coming Secret Chiefs 3, MadLove and Umlaut tour of South America, rumoured to be set for August.

Recently Trevor Dunn spoke MadLove with theoffline.com. The interview, shown below, touches on Trevor’s brief  involvement with ex-Korn guitarist and born again christian, Head…no comment, his lack of involvement with Secret Chiefs 3 and the jazz influenced dynamics of the band he has crafted, MadLove .

Meanwhile, amid torrential rain and Melbourne floods, Umlaut took to the stage at the Evelyn, on February 4, and unleashed a few new tracks on the wet, happy crowd. Could these unreleased songs be a taste of the new album? We can only hope.  Below is one said track, titled Trutes, courtesy of Jean Lizza aka Mother Hubbard. Check out her youtube channel for more, including the epic number RIP Richard Dunn.

Stay tuned for more details on the South American tour, but first, here is a look back at the Secret Chiefs 3 lineup that toured Australia in 1998, back when music  programs in Australia were actually decent. Recovery…we miss you. Renunciation, featuring Trey Spruance, Danny Heifetz, Trevor Dunn and Bär McKinnon:
