Not long after Trevor, Trey and Mike were busy in New York together making spectacular musics at Zorn’s Masada Marathon, Danny and Bar are hooking up for one special night at the Toff!
Julian Curwin’s Mango Balloon (The Tango Saloon’s sexy cousin) will be joining Umlaut for a show tomorrow night at the Toff, followed by a show the following day at the Evelyn supported by Angus Leslie’s Sex on Toast.
Meanwhile Umlaut are also busy working on a new album and prepping for the big South American foray with Trevor Dunn’s MadLove and Secret Chiefs 3.
It’s a day for reminiscing, here at stubbadub. A year ago today, Gronk and I were with a bunch of you good people at the Hordern Pavillion, Sydney, for Faith No More‘s first sidewave. But, after wallowing in many a bittersweet memory today, it’s time to look to the future, and so to the up-and-coming Secret Chiefs 3, MadLove and Umlaut tour of South America, rumoured to be set for August.
Recently Trevor Dunn spoke MadLove with theoffline.com. The interview, shown below, touches on Trevor’s brief involvement with ex-Korn guitarist and born again christian, Head…no comment, his lack of involvement with Secret Chiefs 3 and the jazz influenced dynamics of the band he has crafted, MadLove .
Meanwhile, amid torrential rain and Melbourne floods, Umlaut took to the stage at the Evelyn, on February 4, and unleashed a few new tracks on the wet, happy crowd. Could these unreleased songs be a taste of the new album? We can only hope. Below is one said track, titled Trutes, courtesy of Jean Lizza aka Mother Hubbard. Check out her youtube channel for more, including the epic number RIP Richard Dunn.
Stay tuned for more details on the South American tour, but first, here is a look back at the Secret Chiefs 3 lineup that toured Australia in 1998, back when music programs in Australia were actually decent. Recovery…we miss you. Renunciation, featuring Trey Spruance, Danny Heifetz, Trevor Dunn and Bär McKinnon:
Good news everyone! (If you live in South America). Jean (Umlaut’s manager) tweeted a very interesting “Big announcement”……. a Secret Chiefs 3, Umlaut and Madlove tour through South America to take place August of this year.
Details are few at best, but check out the tweet for the hard evidence and I’ll do my best to keep you all updated with any news.
New song from Umlaut, performed live at the Toff last week, to appear on their next album hopefully released next year:
“Umlaut perform Spaghet! live at The Toff 01/12/10. Spaghet! is a new song, taking it’s title from the character of the same name, featured in Tim and Eric, Awesome Show, Great Job! Spaghet! will feature in Umlaut’s next album, recording early 2011. Plus an intro drum solo by Umlaut’s Gareth Thomson.”
Those crazy kids over in the Umlaut camp have pulled some awesome together and just released an online store filled with such Umlaut-ey goodness as hoodies, shirts and CDs.
I know there have been lots of you asking me where to get Umlaut gear, so go get some……….
So we have a date 2020 is when Bungle return…..at least according to Bar’s tongue-in-cheek response to the question posed to him by Music Vice in a recent interview:
“Yes. Only after enough time has passed that we have become so senile that the memories of petty resentments and grudges have faded. We’re looking at 2020. Just saw Danny today in Sydney, and hope to somehow include him in future recordings.”
BTW I spoke to Bar backstage at the recent Sydney Umlaut show about his thoughts on an eventual Bungle reunion taking place and he is super keen for it to happen, so it still is possible but I wouldn’t be holding my breath for anything in the immediate future…..
If you are able to get down to one of the upcoming aussie Umlaut gigs make sure you do because according to that guy Angus it’s a good show all round. I’ll definitely be at the Factory on Saturday having a few brews and enjoying the show.

Ladies and Gents, boys and girls, people of Melbourne! Round up the masses for a superb night of musical intrigue, delectable ditties and sheer swinging fun that is bound to have you grooving like some sort of dysfunctional dashboard hula doll.
Sex on Toasthave a gig coming up at The Evelyn, May 27th and I defy you to go and not enjoy the living bejesus out of it. Seriously, these are some really talented guys, and it will certainly be an evening well spent.
The official word:
Sex on Toast
The Clintonicas (ex-Bärhugs, USA, Mr. B)
Fabio Umberto (Italy)
The illustrious gents in Sex on Toast cordially invite you to an evening of pleasure and finery, on Thursday 27th of May at The Evelyn. Joining them is Fabio Umberto, all the way from Rimini, Italy. This 1980’s Ital-disco legend will put pep in your step and the bump in your rump. After a considerable hiatus, California legends The Clintonica’s (ex-Bärhugs, USA, Mr. B) bring their signature brand of windswept dude-rock to Melbourne for one show only.
Sex on Toast requests your presence for this sensational night of pure entertainment. Doors at 9pm. $7 entry.
Now, I’m not usually one to speculate but The Clintonicas?! Ahem, “Bärhugs“, “Mr B.”… is this ringing bells with anyone? For those who maybe aren’t aware of the musical ties here, Sex on Toast‘s guitarist, one Angus Leslie and the man behind the keys, Mr Olaf Scott, feature in another of stubbadub’s much loved bands: Umlaut.
I’m wondering what the chef’s got cooking here. As I’m a west coast lady and dear Gronk is a Sydney boy, I need you stubbers to get down there and find out what the hell is going on.
And yet another awesome Umlaut gig coming up in Melbourne, damn those guys are spoiled
“Aniseed Records present Umlaut at The Evelyn, Saturday March 13th from 8pm with special guests cult doom outfit, Terminal Sound System, the eclectically brilliant Lan Party and somber echo four-piece, Sons.
Doors at 8pm. $12 entry.”
Make sure you get down there if you can. I know I would if I could………
It’s the party end of the year (well it was when I started this post) and it’s time for the first ever inaugural Stubbadub top 10 albums of the year list!
Even without any significant contributions from Mike Patton this year, which can be directly attributed to a certain reunion tour, there have been many great Stubbadub related releases to tickle our ear drums.
So lets get started. Counting down from 10 to 1:
10. Zu – Carboniferous (Mike Patton) - Italian metallers Zu released their latest album Carboniferous via Mike Patton’s label Ipecac Recordings. Mike appears on a couple of tracks (Soulympics and Orc) along with Buzz from the Melvins (Chthonian).
09. Shrinebuilder – Self Titled (Dale Crover) - Featuring Dale Crover of The Melvins fame on drums and Neurosis frontman Scott Kelly on Guitar, Shrinebuilder released their stoner fueled debut album in October.
07. Jello Biafra And The Guantanamo School Of Medicine – The Audacity of Hype (Billy Gould) – The latest installment from outspoken ex-Dead Kennedys’ vocalist, Eric Reed Boucher aka Jello Biafra is a kick in the sack from start to finish. The album features Billy Gould on bass and one has to assume that he would have toured with the band if he hadn’t been side tracked by the recent reformation of Faith No More. Hopefully he can make the next tour (and they bring it to Australia )
06. Chuck Mosley and the VUA – Will Rap over Hard Rock for Food (Chuck Mosley) – It’s been a while since Chuck released anything of significance, but it was worth the wait. A good album over all and the rework of Faith No More’s We Care a Lot (Featuring special guest Mr Roddy Bottum on keys) is very interesting and worth grabbing the album for alone.
05. Umlaut – Self Titled (Bar McKinnon) – Bar’s first release since becoming an Aussie. Recently toured with Les Claypool. A very tidy album all round with some very nice Bungle-esque/Secret Chiefs 3 moments.
04. Isis – Wavering Radiant (Ipecac Recordings) – The latest installment from rockers Isis as usual does not disappoint.
02. The Fantastic Terrific Munkle – Music to Dance To (Danny Heifetz) – It is very difficult to keep up with what Danny is working on nowdays as he does not have any established online presence, but the best thing he is involved with at the moment is the Munkle band. Check this album out
01. John Zorn – O’o (Trevor Dunn) – The latest in Zorn’s “Romance” series and the follow up to 2008′s “The Dreamers”, this is an amazing record and by far my album of the year.
Hopefully next year we will see the highly anticipated release of Mike Patton’s Mondo Cane, possibly Crudo and fingers crossed another Fantomas would be most welcome.
Bar Mckinnon’s Umlaut will be supporting Les Claypool on his national tour of Australia in December for the following dates:
Wed 2 Dec Enmore Theatre Sydney
Fri 4 Dec Forum Theatre Melbourne
“Bar McKinnon of Umlaut is thrilled to be supporting Les Claypool on the Sydney and Melbourne tour dates. Having toured in the ’90′s, Primus and Mr Bungle go way back, it’s like old times!”
This will mark the first occasion that Umlaut have ventured North to Sydney, which is very pleasing for at least one fan who happens to reside in Sydney and has been begging for a Sydney show…………
