The Melvins Remix Album, Chicken Switch Released
The latest Melvins release which happens to not be a Melvins release is out. Entitled Chicken Switch, the album is a “remix” album featuring some usual suspects such as Yamatsuka Eye and Merzbow.
More importantly is the news from the official Ipecac announcement that there will be a new Melvins album mid 2010!
Official Ipecac announcement:
“How can the US reform it’s health care system?
Does David Hasselhof have a drinking problem?
What’s with the weather?
Is there anything better on TV than “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”?
When is a new Melvins record not a new Melvins record?
Well, we can’t figure out the Kardashians for you, but we can tell you
this, there is a “new” Melvins record out, and it’s called “Chicken
Switch”. It includes some of the Melvins coolest songs from the past,
but the twist is, these songs have been remixed by some of the leading
purveyors of underground, noise music. You got your Speedranch,
Matmos, Eye from the Boredoms, Lee Ronaldo, Merzbow and more
reinterpreting songs you’ve cherished since childhood. Hard to call
most of these remixes as they stand on their own as new tunes. This
project was spearheaded by you the Melvins fans at the Melvins website
with the Melvins stamp of approval. So it’s gotta be good, right? This will keep you satisfied until the new Melvins studio record is
unleashed in mid 2010.So, what’s a ‘Chicken Switch’?”

gave it a listen. only about two songs had recognizable samples. the rest reminded me of the tracks between songs on the Lustmord album, which i haven’t listened to in awhile, so i may be way off. i’ll definitely rotate it in, but it wasn’t what i expected. i kinda wanted cut and pasting and retooling. this stands alone, alright. noise fans, experimental fans will like it.

Good point. I don’t expect much from Melvins releases aside from their proper albums but I thought given the hype of this release over the last few years the remixes would actually be somewhat interesting. Not only did I find it boring as hell but it sounded rushed & just slapped together at the last minute. Ipecac should be embarrassed putting their name to this.

Yeah I thought there would be a bit of novelty about it but I found it a bit painful to listen to tbh. Ah well, I’m keen for next years studio album, although nude with boots didn’t blow me out if the water either.
